Once a decision has been made to proceed with in vitro fertilization and the precycle evaluation and testing is
complete, then you are ready to proceed with the cycle.
The cycle commences with stimulation of the ovaries using injectable fertility medications and thereafter
monitoring is performed through blood tests and ultrasounds. When the follicles reach an optimum size, an
injection of hCG is given to trigger the final maturation of eggs.
The eggs are retrieved through the vagina with ultrasound using a light anesthetic. Once the eggs are identified
they are fertilized in the laboratory either through mixing when the sperm parameters and the eggs are healthy
all through intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
when there is either a sperm or an egg factor.
Once the eggs are fertilized they are carefully nurtured in the laboratory and they become embryos which are
ready for transfer into the uterus on day 3 or sometimes on day 4 or 5. If
Preimplantation Genetic Testing is being
performed, the embryos are biopsied on the morning of day 3 and the normal embryos are then transferred the
following day 4.
Approximately ten days after embryo transfer the first blood pregnancy test is performed and after another
two weeks the first ultrasound will confirm the pregnancy.
